Well this is new to me, the world of blogging. Here’s hoping I don’t embarrass myself.
A few words about the blog. First, the title. As paraphrased from our good friend Wikipedia: Cognitive dissonance is an uncomfortable feeling caused by holding two contradictory ideas simultaneously. Dissonance normally occurs when a person perceives a logical inconsistency among his or her cognitions. The theory of cognitive dissonance proposes that people have a motivational drive to reduce dissonance by changing their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours, or by justifying or rationalizing their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours. Cognitive dissonance theory is one of the most influential and extensively studied theories in social psychology.
This blog will not focus on one specific topic. Oh, no. I am much too interested in the stuff of this world to limit myself. I will write about science and Skepticism, politics, culture and pop culture, humanity and sociology, the things that make up everyday life, and anything else that strikes my fancy. My hope is that with every new post will be the thrill of discovery. I will try to be engaging, interesting, intelligent, thought-provoking, and witty. I will try.
I am a grammar geek and a word nerd, but the nature of blogging dictates that the odd typo or mistake will creep in. Please alert me to these if you spot them so I can fix them. I am slightly anal-retentive.
I tend to write the way I speak, so be prepared for exclamation marks (gasp!), italics (did she say italics?), em dashes—yes, em dashes!, and parenthetical asides (see?). And finally, although I am a stickler and would feel comfortable in an Eats, Shoots and Leaves book club, I will not let go of the final comma before an “and.” You can pry the final-comma-before-an-and from my cold, dead hands.
And now a note on comments. If this blog should take off and people outside of my immediate circle of friends begin to read it, I will be a hard-ass about comments. I’m sure that from time to time I will say things that may incite controversy, but any bigotry whatsoever will not be tolerated in comments. Racist, sexist, or homophobic comments will be promptly deleted. As will general bone-headedness. I will use my own discretion. I am the boss of this blog, so don’t piss me off.
Finally, let’s have fun! Welcome all. If you’re reading these early posts, please show some love and share the joy to help my self-esteem. I hope that in time I will have tens of readers!
